A suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) outside a bank in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz on Tuesday, killing at least five people, including members of the Taliban security forces. Seven others were wounded in the attack, which targeted a group of people waiting to collect their salaries at the bank.
Jumadin Khaksar, a police spokesman for Kunduz province, confirmed that civilians, civil servants, and Taliban security personnel were among the victims of the attack. Authorities are investigating the incident, and the Kunduz Province Police Command is working with relevant organizations to identify and apprehend those responsible.
While there has been no immediate claim of responsibility, the attack comes nearly a year after a similar bombing outside a bank in Kandahar, claimed by the regional chapter of the Islamic State (IS). Despite a noticeable reduction in bombings and suicide attacks since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, armed groups, including IS, still pose a significant threat in Afghanistan.
