UN Honors Peacekeepers for Their Service and Sacrifice

The United Nations recently commemorated peacekeepers during the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. This year, the observance highlighted the dedication and sacrifices of over 68,000 personnel currently deployed in various missions worldwide.

Key Highlights from the Commemoration

  • Tribute to Fallen Heroes: The UN honored more than 4,400 peacekeepers who lost their lives in duty, including 57 in 2024. Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the organization will never forget their service.
  • Focus on Future Challenges: This year’s theme centered on the future of peacekeeping. Guterres noted that peacekeepers face complex situations, including terrorism and misinformation. He stressed the need for well-equipped forces to tackle these challenges.
  • Recognition of Outstanding Peacekeepers: The event recognized two women peacekeepers for their contributions to gender equality. Squadron Leader Sharon Mwinsote Syme from Ghana received the 2024 UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year award, while Chief Superintendent Zainab Mbalu Gbla from Sierra Leone earned the title of Woman Police Officer of the Year.
  • Commitment to Support: Jean-Pierre Lacroix, head of UN Peacekeeping, discussed the importance of international partnerships in supporting these efforts. He noted that recent meetings have led to pledges of support from over 130 delegations, focusing on personnel, training, and technology.

The commemoration reminded everyone of the critical role peacekeepers play in maintaining global peace and security and the ongoing need for support and resources to enhance their effectiveness.
