Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has urged the nation’s leaders to assertively defend Australia’s interests when dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking at the National Press Club, Turnbull stressed that political leaders must prioritize national interests instead of showing excessive deference to foreign powers.
During his address, Turnbull humorously mimicked Trump to illustrate the need for confidence in negotiations. He stated, “If that unsettles you, then you’re in the wrong job.”
His remarks come as the U.S. plans to impose new tariffs that could affect Australian exports. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has made it clear that Australia will not compromise on key policies, such as biosecurity laws and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, in trade talks.
Turnbull also questioned the AUKUS defense pact’s effectiveness and called for a transparent review of how it impacts Australia’s sovereignty.
His comments have ignited debate over Australia’s approach to foreign policy and the importance of strong leadership in international affairs.
