North Korea recently held the 31st Pyongyang International Marathon, marking its first international sporting event since the COVID-19 pandemic began. This marathon was the first of its kind in North Korea since the pandemic.
The marathon took place on April 6, 2025, in Pyongyang, attracting athletes from countries including China and Ethiopia. Approximately 200 foreign participants arrived in Pyongyang in the days leading up to the event. The race was held to commemorate the birthday of Kim Il Sung, the nation’s founder.
This event is significant as it marks the first time non-Russian tourists have been allowed to visit Pyongyang since the pandemic began. It also highlights North Korea’s gradual reopening to international visitors after a prolonged period of isolation.
