The Walrus Wins Gold in Issue Grand Prix at the National Magazine Awards

The power of Canadian journalism was celebrated at the 2025 National Magazine Awards. The Walrus is delighted to have won Gold in the Issue Grand Prix category for If He Wins: How Poilievre Will Change Canada and Silver in the Columns & Essays category for The Collapse of Self‐Worth in the Digital Age.

“It’s not lost on me how many stories go unnoticed,” said Carmine Starnino, editor-in-chief of The Walrus. “You always hope the work lives beyond the moment it’s published, so it’s deeply gratifying and moving to see my team’s ambition, creativity, and risk taking honoured in this way.”

The day before the National Magazine Awards ceremony, The Walrus also won third place in the 2025 Indigenous Media Awards Best Longform/Magazine Story category for the story “How Workplace Diversity Fails Indigenous Employees,” written by Michelle Cyca and edited by Harley Rustad.

“Bravo to all nominees and winners,” said Jennifer Hollett, executive director of The Walrus. “Our team of writers, artists, fact checkers, and editors works hard all year long. It’s a special moment to receive such recognition from our industry peers, with renewed interest in the importance of Canada’s stories right now across the country.”

The depth and breadth of the work that The Walrus was nominated for are a testament to our commitment to telling all of Canada’s stories—through words, art, and photography. From political coverage and the plight of migrants to art fraud and navigating one’s self-esteem in today’s digital age, The Walrus has covered Canada’s conversations from coast to coast to coast.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, the writers, artists, photographers, editors, fact checkers, and everyone on the team for making these wins possible.
