A devastating fire at the Pulse nightclub in Kočani, North Macedonia, claimed the lives of at least 59 individuals and injured approximately 155 others. The tragedy occurred during a concert by the hip-hop band DNK, attended by about 1,500 people. The fire was ignited by pyrotechnics that set the club’s flammable ceiling ablaze, leading to rapid smoke spread and a chaotic evacuation.
Many victims, aged between 14 and 24, suffered from smoke inhalation, burns, and injuries from a stampede toward the club’s single exit. Some remain in critical condition.
Authorities have issued arrest warrants for four individuals connected to the incident, including the club owner, who has been detained. Investigations have revealed that the Pulse nightclub was operating without a legal license and had previously functioned as a carpet warehouse. Allegations of bribery and corruption have surfaced, implicating former officials in allowing the club to operate despite safety violations.
In response to the tragedy, the North Macedonian government has declared a seven-day mourning period and plans to intensify inspections of similar venues to ensure compliance with safety regulations. European nations, including Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, and the EU, have extended condolences and offered assistance.
