EU Partners with Nigeria to Strengthen Democracy, Empower Young Political Leaders

The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democracy in Nigeria by supporting initiatives that enhance youth participation in politics and governance.

Through the Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Programme, the EU is funding Yiaga Africa’s Constituency Office Internship Programme, which provides young Nigerians with hands-on experience in legislative processes and constituency engagement.

Building Capacity for Democratic Participation

The three-month internship program, which began in December 2024 and will conclude in February 2025, offers a unique opportunity for young individuals passionate about democratic development to engage with lawmakers and contribute to governance at the grassroots level.

Speaking on the EU’s support, Zissimos Vergos, the Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, emphasized the critical role of youth in Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Young people play a significant role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy by actively participating in electoral and governance processes. They contribute to policies, frameworks, and guidelines that ensure free, fair, credible, and transparent elections,” Vergos stated.

He highlighted the importance of ethical leadership and active citizenship, stressing that democracy thrives when individuals engage responsibly rather than merely criticizing institutions.

Strengthening Lawmaker-Community Relations

Yiaga Africa’s Programme Manager, Yetunde Bakarei, underscored the impact of the internship initiative in bridging the gap between lawmakers and their constituents.

“The Constituency Office Internship Programme encourages youth participation in the democratic process, ensuring that young people have a voice in shaping policies that affect them,” Bakarei said.

She expressed gratitude to the EU for its unwavering support, which has enabled the deployment of young interns to constituency offices, fostering a deeper connection between governance and the people.

Interns Share Their Experiences

Several interns shared how the program has shaped their career aspirations and personal growth.

Olaiya Oluwadamilola highlighted how the internship had strengthened her confidence and communication skills, inspiring her to pursue a career in politics and contribute meaningfully to her community.

Similarly, Salihu Gode praised the EU’s commitment to inclusive governance and emphasized the value of mentorship in political development.

“With the skills and knowledge I’ve acquired, I’m confident that I can drive meaningful change in my community and contribute to Nigeria’s democratic growth,” Gode said.

She also expressed her dedication to empowering women and increasing female participation in politics—an area in which the EU continues to provide strong support.

Conclusion

The EU’s investment in youth-driven governance programs reflects its broader commitment to strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria. By equipping young people with the knowledge and experience needed to engage in politics, initiatives like the Constituency Office Internship Programme ensure a more vibrant, participatory democracy for the country’s future.
