Ex-Convict, Ryan Peake Secures British Open Spot

Former Australian motorcycle gang member Ryan Peake completed a remarkable redemption story by winning the New Zealand Open, securing his qualification for this year’s British Open in Northern Ireland. The 31-year-old, who served five years in prison for a serious assault, delivered a career-defining performance to claim a one-shot victory at Millbrook Resort near Queenstown on Sunday.

Peake’s win not only marks his first professional title but also offers a transformative moment in his life, as he expressed his emotions after the final round. “Yeah, I’m pretty lost for words at the moment—life-changing,” he said. The heavily tattooed golfer emphasized that his focus is now solely on the sport, leaving his past behind.

His path to the tournament was not straightforward, as immigration officials initially delayed his entry into New Zealand due to his criminal record. However, after receiving clearance, Peake arrived just in time for Thursday’s opening round. Despite this setback, he showcased exceptional consistency, finishing with rounds of 67, 64, 64, and 66 to end at 23-under par. A crucial birdie on the 17th hole helped him edge out competitors Jack Thompson (Australia), Ian Snyman (South Africa), and Kazuki Higa (Japan), who finished one stroke behind.

Peake’s victory earned him a $201,600 winner’s cheque and a spot in the British Open, pending travel clearance. As a rookie on the Australasian Tour, he now looks to continue his resurgence on the global stage.
