An investigation revealed that a faulty radio antenna caused the Sea World helicopter crash on Australia’s Gold Coast in January 2023. The malfunction hindered communication between the two helicopters involved, leading to a collision that killed four people and injured others.
Sea World Helicopters had recently made operational changes, such as using larger helicopters and placing new helipads. However, these changes were not fully evaluated for safety risks. Additionally, the helicopter design, combined with visibility issues, contributed to the crash.
The investigation also found improper seating arrangements and seatbelt fittings, which worsened the severity of injuries. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) recommended Sea World Helicopters reassess its safety procedures and improve its management systems.
In response, Sea World Helicopters has committed to addressing these issues. They plan to add staff and equip helicopters with advanced situational awareness tools. The ATSB emphasized the need for strong safety systems to prevent future incidents. A coronial inquest will further examine the crash.
