Two young women were taken into custody by Iranian police following the release of a video showing them dancing in a Tehran cemetery while not conforming to the country’s strict dress regulations, as reported by local media on Friday.
“A short time ago, two individuals filmed a video in the martyrs’ cemetery in Tehran, neglecting the sanctity of the site, while dressed inappropriately and displaying movements that went against local customs and Sharia,” read a police statement shared by the Tasnim news agency.
This incident led to significant public outrage, particularly from the families of the martyrs, resulting in the arrest of the two individuals by the police, who then transferred them to judicial authorities,” the statement continued.
Since the imposition of rules following the 1979 Islamic revolution, women are required to wear loose-fitting clothes, covering their hair and neck in public, and dancing in public areas is also prohibited.
Numerous women have challenged traditions by allowing their headscarves to slide back and show more of their hair, particularly in Tehran and other major urban areas.
This trend has become increasingly noticeable, especially since the unrest began after Mahsa Amini’s death in custody in September 2022. She was taken into custody by the morality police for purportedly breaching the dress regulations.
In the ensuing months of widespread protests, hundreds of individuals, including many security forces, lost their lives, and thousands of protesters were detained.
