Myanmar Mourns as Earthquake Death Toll Exceeds 2,000

Myanmar has entered a week of national mourning after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake killed over 2,000 people. The ruling junta ordered flags to fly at half-mast until April 6 to honor the victims. On Tuesday at 12:51 pm, the exact time of the quake, the nation will observe a minute of silence.

Rescue teams continue searching for survivors in Mandalay and other affected cities. The earthquake destroyed monasteries, mosques, and schools, trapping many under rubble. Efforts face setbacks due to power outages, fuel shortages, and poor communication. Teams from China, India, and Russia have arrived, but damaged roads and buildings slow relief work.

The disaster has worsened an already dire humanitarian crisis. Millions in Myanmar need urgent help due to ongoing conflicts and disease outbreaks. The United Nations estimates that relief efforts will require $15-20 million per month until June.

As the country mourns, authorities urge international partners to provide aid for immediate relief and long-term rebuilding.
