Nigerian Navy Apprehends 35 Vessels in Fight Against Oil Theft

The Nigerian Navy has seized over 35 vessels involved in illegal oil bunkering in Nigerian waters, according to Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla. This action highlights the Navy’s ongoing efforts to combat oil theft and secure the nation’s maritime domain.

Operation Delta Sanity Enhances Maritime Security

During a maritime stakeholders meeting in Abuja, Vice Admiral Ogalla announced that authorities have taken custody of the apprehended vessels. He emphasized the Navy’s commitment to its statutory roles and creating a secure maritime environment that supports economic growth.

To enhance maritime security, the Navy launched “Operation Delta Sanity” in January. This operation increases surveillance and improves response capabilities while enforcing the law. Additionally, the Navy collaborates with various maritime stakeholders to tackle oil theft and related crimes effectively.

Ogalla noted the complex security challenges facing Nigeria’s oil sector, such as pipeline vandalism, piracy, and sea robbery. These issues often arise from factors like the proliferation of small arms, communal clashes, poverty, and unemployment. Therefore, he stressed the need for innovative strategies to address these challenges and protect the nation’s valuable maritime resources.

Commitment to Supporting Legitimate Businesses

Ogalla reassured stakeholders that the Navy’s operations aim to support legitimate business activities. He stated that maritime operators should conduct their operations without hindrance. Moreover, the Navy will promptly investigate any instances where arrests are based on incorrect information to prevent disruptions to legitimate businesses.

Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), highlighted that Nigeria’s crude oil production currently stands at 1.6 million barrels per day. He expressed optimism about reaching a target of 2 million barrels per day by the year’s end, thanks to the Navy’s support in reducing oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

In conclusion, the Nigerian Navy’s efforts to combat oil theft play a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s economy and ensuring the sustainable development of its maritime resources. Through initiatives like Operation Delta Sanity and collaboration with stakeholders, the Navy works to create a secure and prosperous maritime environment for all.
