Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham insists his red card against Osasuna was a misunderstanding and denies insulting referee Jose Munuera Montero during the 1-1 draw on Saturday.
The England international was dismissed in the 39th minute after exchanging words with the official, who claimed in his report that Bellingham insulted him. However, the 21-year-old maintains he was expressing general frustration and not directing any offensive remarks at the referee.
“I think you can see clearly in the video—it was an expression I was saying to myself,” Bellingham said. “There was no intent to insult him, and for that reason, I think there was a misunderstanding.”
Real Madrid have been vocal about refereeing inconsistencies in Spain, even sending a letter to the Spanish football federation calling the officiating “rigged.” Bellingham hopes video evidence will clear him of wrongdoing and prevent a lengthy suspension.
This marks his second red card since joining Madrid from Borussia Dortmund in 2023, the first coming last March after arguing with a referee following a 2-2 draw against Valencia.
Despite the draw, Madrid moved two points clear of Atletico Madrid, though they are now winless in three consecutive La Liga matches.
