The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has announced significant achievements in supporting small businesses. In the past two years, the agency secured over N11 billion in financing and facilitated more than 100,000 jobs.
Strategic Support for SMEs
Charles Odii, Director-General of SMEDAN, stated that these accomplishments reflect a deliberate strategy to expand access to finance, tools, and training for small businesses nationwide. This aligns with national goals for inclusive economic growth and job creation. Through partnerships with the National Assembly, SMEDAN has empowered thousands of entrepreneurs with essential tools and equipment. Furthermore, the agency has revitalized Industrial Development Centers in Abuja, Osun, and Katsina, providing small businesses with access to modern machinery, reliable power, and enterprise support.
In addition, SMEDAN is collaborating with international partners such as UNDP, GIZ, and Google to enhance the digital and technical capabilities of Nigerian entrepreneurs. These partnerships aim to open new pathways to local and international markets. By simplifying business registration and compliance, SMEDAN is creating a more supportive environment for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
The agency is also working with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to help young Nigerians transform business ideas into viable ventures. One notable initiative is the solar-powered Garment Hub in Abuja’s Idu Centre, which assists fashion entrepreneurs in scaling up their operations with consistent power and modern machinery. Through its GROW Nigerian model, SMEDAN is anchoring communities around empowered small businesses.
Overall, SMEDAN’s efforts are crucial in driving economic development and reducing unemployment in Nigeria. By focusing on small and medium enterprises, the agency is fostering innovation and resilience within the local economy. The achievements of the past two years signify a commitment to creating a vibrant landscape for entrepreneurship, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for Nigeria.
