India’s Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways has stated that Tesla has expressed no interest in establishing car production facilities in the country. This revelation comes amid ongoing discussions about attracting foreign investment in India’s automotive sector.
The minister noted that despite India’s push to become a hub for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, Tesla has opted to focus on other markets. This decision may disappoint many who hoped to see the American electric carmaker expand its operations into India, which has a growing demand for EVs.
Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, previously highlighted challenges such as high import duties and regulatory hurdles as barriers to entry. The Indian government has been working to improve the investment climate, but it appears these efforts have not swayed Tesla’s interest.
While Tesla may not pursue local production for now, the Indian market remains attractive for other EV manufacturers. The country aims to boost its EV ecosystem and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, presenting opportunities for various companies in the sector.
