Tight Security as President Tinubu Addresses Joint Session of National Assembly on Democracy Day

A heightened security presence was evident at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on June 12, 2025, to commemorate Nigeria’s Democracy Day. This year marks the 26th anniversary of Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999.

Security Measures

Security operatives from various agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, the Civil Defence Corps, and the National Assembly’s Sergeant-at-Arms, were strategically positioned within and around the complex. Vehicular movement was heavily restricted, with access granted only to accredited personnel and lawmakers. Intensified security checks were conducted at all entry points.

Change in Schedule

President Tinubu’s address to the National Assembly replaced the previously scheduled nationwide broadcast. Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, stated that the change was due to the President’s attendance at the joint session. The traditional military parade, initially planned for the Democracy Day celebrations, was also cancelled, although no official reason was provided for its cancellation.

Democracy Day Activities

Despite the changes to the schedule, other Democracy Day activities proceeded as planned. These included a public lecture at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, with the theme “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”

Significance of the Address

President Tinubu’s address to the joint session of the National Assembly is expected to highlight the government’s reform agenda, the importance of national unity, and the collective responsibility of citizens and institutions in sustaining democratic governance. The National Assembly’s joint session was scheduled to commence at 11:00 AM, with President Tinubu’s arrival expected at 12:00 noon. The joint sitting represents a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, underscoring the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and advancing national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule. The program also included goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of National Honours on select legislators by the President.

Potential Protests

Amidst the Democracy Day celebrations, there were reports of planned protests against the economic hardship in the country. The “Take It Back Movement” and other civil society groups reportedly planned demonstrations in Abuja and other locations.
