President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he has ordered the immediate dismissal of all remaining U.S. attorneys who were appointed by his predecessor, Joe Biden.
“Over the past four years, the Department of Justice has been politicized like never before,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “Therefore, I have instructed the termination of ALL remaining ‘Biden Era’ U.S. Attorneys.”
Trump emphasized the need for a judicial overhaul, stating, “We must ‘clean house’ IMMEDIATELY and restore confidence. America’s Golden Age must have a fair Justice System – THAT BEGINS TODAY!”
It is standard for an incoming president to replace U.S. attorneys, who serve as the top federal prosecutors in each of the 94 judicial districts across the country. Currently, 93 U.S. attorneys oversee these districts, with two districts sharing a single prosecutor.
Following Trump’s election victory in November, several U.S. attorneys appointed by Biden resigned in anticipation of being replaced. However, Trump’s directive signals a broader shake-up within the Justice Department, which he has repeatedly accused of bias against him.
Since taking office, Trump has overseen major changes within the DOJ, leading to the firing, demotion, or reassignment of numerous high-ranking officials. Among those dismissed were members of the office of Special Counsel Jack Smith, who had previously brought criminal cases against Trump that were later abandoned.
Additionally, the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, a Trump appointee, resigned last week after being asked by the Justice Department to drop corruption charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams.
