As Muslims around the world begin observing the Holy Month of Ramadan, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for peace, unity, and compassion in a message released on Friday. He extended warm wishes to the global Muslim community and emphasized the significance of Ramadan as a time for reflection, generosity, and strengthening family and community bonds.
Guterres highlighted the importance of remembering those facing hardship, particularly individuals affected by displacement and violence. He expressed his solidarity with people suffering in conflict zones such as Gaza, Sudan, the Sahel, and other crisis-affected areas.
“To all those who will spend this sacred time amid displacement and violence, I wish to express a special message of support,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment to those enduring hardship.
The Secretary-General also spoke about his personal tradition of visiting Muslim communities worldwide during Ramadan, fasting alongside them to reaffirm the values of Islam and showcase its true spirit. He described these visits as deeply inspiring and reinforcing the season’s message of peace.
Guterres concluded his message with a call for shared humanity, urging people across the globe to work together in building a more just and peaceful world. He ended with a heartfelt “Ramadan Kareem,” extending his best wishes to all those observing the sacred month.
