World Health Day: Aid Cuts Threaten Progress in Reducing Maternal Deaths, UN Warns

On World Health Day, UN agencies warned that cuts in international aid could reverse progress in reducing maternal deaths. Global maternal mortality declined by 40% from 2000 to 2023, thanks to better access to healthcare. Yet, in 2023, 260,000 women died from pregnancy-related issues, equating to one death every two minutes.

Aid cuts have caused clinic closures, staff layoffs, and disruptions in medicine supplies. These changes harm pregnant women in conflict areas, potentially increasing maternal deaths. UN health leaders stress that the world could miss the goal of fewer than 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 births by 2030 without immediate action.

Experts urge increased investment in healthcare workers and services. Strengthening health systems and improving maternal care are critical to saving women’s lives.
