The European Union (EU), in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria, is championing a zero-waste agenda within the fashion and textile sector. This collaboration aligns with the United Nations’ International Zero Waste agenda and aims to promote sustainable practices in the industry.
In support of this initiative, the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS hosted the Zero Waste Eco-Fair on April 4, 2025. The event brought together thought leaders, young Nigerians, innovators, policymakers, and changemakers committed to advancing the circular economy.
The fashion and textile industry is a major contributor to global waste pollution. Studies show that each year, the world generates about 92 million tonnes of textile waste. Shockingly, every second, the equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothing is either incinerated or dumped in landfills.
The EU has taken active steps to address these challenges. In March 2022, the European Commission introduced the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles. This policy focuses on promoting greener production methods, reuse, and repair. It also encourages consumers to shift away from fast fashion and choose durable, high-quality products.
This partnership between the EU and Nigeria reflects a shared commitment to building a sustainable, environmentally responsible fashion and textile sector.
