India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced that the United States has deported over 1,000 Indian nationals since January 2025. This figure highlights ongoing cooperation between India and the US on migration issues, particularly concerning individuals in illegal status.
Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that approximately 62% of those deported returned to India on commercial flights. The US has identified around 18,000 Indian nationals who entered the country illegally, underscoring the scale of the issue.
Recently, the US has intensified efforts to address undocumented migration, resulting in deportations of individuals who have overstayed their visas. The US Embassy in India has warned that overstaying may lead to deportation or a permanent re-entry ban, even for those who initially entered legally.
Jaiswal also addressed concerns about new US visa policies affecting Indian students. He expressed hope that the US would consider applications fairly, allowing students to join their academic programs on time. In the 2023-24 academic year, about 330,000 Indian students traveled to the US for studies, making India the largest source of international students.
As the situation evolves, the Indian government continues to engage with US authorities to ensure the welfare of its nationals abroad.
