Myanmar Earthquake: Death Toll Exceeds 1,700 Amid Ongoing Rescue Efforts

On March 28, 2025, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, resulting in over 1,700 fatalities and approximately 3,400 injuries. The quake’s epicenter was near the Sagaing–Mandalay border region, causing extensive damage across multiple areas, including the capital, Naypyidaw, and Mandalay.

Impact and Challenges

The earthquake severely damaged infrastructure such as bridges, highways, airports, and railways, complicating rescue operations. Communication disruptions have further hindered efforts, especially in regions already affected by ongoing civil conflict. The disaster struck during Friday prayers, leading to significant casualties within the Muslim community, with reports of 700 worshippers killed in collapsed mosques.

International Response

International aid has begun to arrive, with teams from Russia, China, India, and Southeast Asian countries assisting in relief efforts. The World Health Organization has reported substantial destruction of healthcare facilities and emphasized the urgent need for medical supplies. Despite offers of assistance, including from the United States, logistical challenges and the country’s political situation have complicated the delivery and distribution of aid.

Regional Effects

The earthquake’s impact extended beyond Myanmar’s borders. In Bangkok, Thailand, a building under construction collapsed due to the tremors, resulting in 17 deaths, 32 injuries, and 83 individuals reported missing. Rescue teams continue to search for survivors amidst the rubble.

Ongoing Efforts

Rescue operations are ongoing, with workers racing against time to locate and assist survivors. Challenges such as aftershocks, high temperatures, and the critical 72-hour window for finding survivors complicate these efforts. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched an emergency appeal to support those affected, highlighting the complex crisis layered over existing vulnerabilities in the region.
