Obaseki Family Seeks Tinubu’s Intervention Over WWII Entitlements in UK

The direct descendants of late Sir Ededuna Walter Obaseki of the Benin Kingdom have appealed to the Federal Government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in securing their patriarch’s entitlements reportedly trapped in the United Kingdom.

The family stated that the entitlements are linked to Sir Obaseki’s service during World War II. They expressed concern that despite the passage of time, the benefits have not been fully accessed or released.

Call for Government Support

According to the descendants, diplomatic intervention has become necessary. They urged the Federal Government to engage relevant authorities in the United Kingdom to resolve the issue.

They emphasized that the request goes beyond financial recovery. It also represents recognition of the sacrifices made by Nigerians who served during World War II.

Therefore, they called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to facilitate discussions that could lead to a fair resolution.

Honouring Historical Contributions

The family highlighted Sir Obaseki’s contributions during the war, noting that many Nigerians played significant roles under colonial administration.

However, several of these individuals and their families have faced challenges in accessing due benefits.

By raising this issue, the descendants aim to bring attention to historical obligations that remain unresolved.

They argued that addressing such matters would help preserve national history and honour those who served.

Diplomatic and Legal Considerations

Resolving the matter may involve diplomatic engagement and legal processes. The Federal Government may need to work with international institutions and UK authorities to verify records and process claims.

Such cases often require detailed documentation and coordination between multiple agencies.

Nevertheless, the family expressed optimism that government intervention could accelerate progress.

A Broader Call for Justice

Beyond their specific case, the appeal reflects a broader concern about unclaimed entitlements linked to historical service.

Many families across Nigeria may face similar challenges. Therefore, resolving this issue could set a precedent for addressing other outstanding claims.

Looking Ahead

As the appeal gains attention, stakeholders will look to the Federal Government for action. Engagement with the United Kingdom could provide a pathway toward resolution.

Ultimately, the request underscores the importance of honouring past sacrifices while ensuring that rightful entitlements reach those they were meant for.
