Prof. Osita Chiaghanam: Leading Academic and New Dean of Postgraduate Studies at COOU

In a major academic development at one of Nigeria’s distinguished federal universities, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) recently appointed Prof. Osita Chiaghanam as the new Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies — a role that places him at the center of shaping advanced research, innovation, and academic excellence in the institution.

This appointment builds on an extensive career of teaching, research, administrative leadership, and scholarly contributions, illustrating Prof. Chiaghanam’s crucial role in Nigerian higher education and his influence on the academic landscape at COOU and beyond.

Academic Roots and Rise Through the Ranks

Prof. Osita Chiaghanam began his academic journey in the sciences, ultimately specializing in geology — a field that combines rigorous scientific inquiry with real-world applications, particularly in natural resource exploration. He earned his B.Sc in Geological Sciences (1996), M.Sc in Petroleum Geology (2000), and later a Ph.D. in Sequence Stratigraphy/Sedimentology (2007) — all from Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

His early academic years began as a Lecturer II at what was then Anambra State University (now COOU) in 2003 — marking the start of a long, prolific tenure at the institution. Over the years, Prof. Chiaghanam steadily climbed the academic ladder, earning promotion to Professor of Geology in 2015 due to his research contributions, mentorship of students, and commitment to teaching excellence.

Leadership Roles and Contributions at COOU

One striking feature of Prof. Chiaghanam’s career has been his readiness to take on progressively complex leadership roles across the COOU academic structure. His administrative experience includes:

  • Assistant Coordinator for Pre-Science (2008–2009)
  • Head of the Department of Geology (2009–2012)
  • Dean of Student Affairs (2012–2013)
  • Coordinator of Pre-Degree Science (2013–2014)
  • Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences (2018–2021)
  • Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic (from 2021)

His extensive administrative portfolio reflects a deep understanding of both student development and faculty governance — a combination essential for steering postgraduate education effectively.

In October 2023, he was re-elected by the university’s Senate for a second term as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic — testimony to the confidence his peers placed in his leadership and vision for academic growth.

Recent Appointment: Dean of Postgraduate Studies

On November 8, 2025, COOU announced that Prof. Chiaghanam would take on the new responsibility of Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, succeeding Prof. Moses Chendo. This position elevates him to one of the most influential roles in the university, involving the oversight of postgraduate programmes, research quality control, academic policy development, and mentorship for master’s and Ph.D. candidates.

Senior members of the university community publicly congratulated him, highlighting his scholarly dedication and competence in steering the university’s postgraduate agenda toward excellence.

Research Impact and Grants

Prof. Chiaghanam’s influence extends beyond administration into research leadership. In June 2024, he was part of a research team that secured a $250,000 grant from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Research for Impact (R4I) Initiative. This grant — awarded through a competitive process — supports solutions designed to address societal challenges and promote sustainable development through scientific research.

Such achievements not only bring funding to the university’s research mission but also underscore Prof. Chiaghanam’s capacity to translate academic inquiry into tangible societal benefits.

Scholarly Focus and Professional Affiliations

As a geologist, Prof. Chiaghanam’s research expertise lies in sequence stratigraphy and the hydrocarbon potential of the Anambra/Niger Delta Basins. His work contributes to understanding the geological frameworks that underpin energy resources — a research area of strategic economic importance for Nigeria.

He is also affiliated with multiple professional bodies, including the Nigerian Mining & Geosciences Society, the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists, and the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers & Geoscientists, reflecting a network that bridges academic research with industry standards and national development priorities.

Challenges and Faculty Relations

Like many academic leaders, Prof. Chiaghanam’s career has had moments of controversy — notably, a historical dispute involving an alternative ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) faction within COOU. In 2022, the National Executive Council of ASUU disowned a faction associated with him during a nationwide strike, indicating challenges in navigating union relations and staff politics.

These experiences have likely shaped his leadership approach, emphasizing negotiation, institutional governance, and stakeholder engagement — all valuable traits for overseeing postgraduate standards.

A Vision for Postsecondary Excellence

As Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Osita Chiaghanam is now positioned to influence how advanced education and research develop at one of Nigeria’s dynamic universities. His academic journey — encompassing research, leadership, and grant achievements — sets the stage for stronger postgraduate programmes that can produce world-class scholars and innovators.

COOU students and faculty will be watching closely as his tenure unfolds, optimistic that postgraduate education at the university will rise to new heights under his stewardship.
