Seven Ethiopian Journalists Detained Over Rape Allegation Broadcast

Ethiopian authorities have detained seven journalists from the Ethiopian Broadcasting Service (EBS) after they aired a woman’s claim that military men abducted and raped her while she was a student. The government calls the broadcast a fabricated documentary and has launched terrorism investigations against the journalists.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has demanded their immediate release. They argue that the charges are an attempt to suppress press freedom and intimidate the media.

This incident underscores growing concerns about the treatment of journalists in Ethiopia. The country faces increasing criticism for restricting press freedom and arbitrarily arresting journalists.
