Starmer Hosts European Leaders for Ukraine Security Talks

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has invited over a dozen European and EU leaders to a summit in London on Sunday to advance collective action on Ukraine and security.

Starmer’s office announced on Friday that he will chair a morning call with Baltic nations before welcoming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Downing Street for discussions on Ukraine’s war with Russia.

“The prime minister will use the summit to drive forward European action on Ukraine – signalling our collective unwavering support to securing a just and enduring peace, and a lasting deal, that ensures Ukraine’s future sovereignty and security,” the statement read.

Attendees include leaders from France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Turkey, NATO, and the European Union, as well as representatives from the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Romania. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa will also participate.

Before the summit, Starmer will hold a one-on-one meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Downing Street. His office stated that discussions will build on the Paris talks hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this month, focusing on military support for Ukraine and economic measures against Russia.

The leaders will emphasize the importance of securing a “strong, lasting deal” to bring about permanent peace while planning robust security guarantees for Ukraine. Starmer is expected to reiterate that Ukraine must be central to any negotiation process while urging European nations to strengthen their defense commitments.

Starmer’s summit follows his Thursday meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. While Trump acknowledged progress in potential truce talks, he stopped short of providing firm security commitments to Europe, raising concerns among European leaders about the stability of Western support for Ukraine.
