Bosun Tijani Directs NCC, NITDA and NDPC to Deepen Collaboration for Nigeria’s Digital Transformation

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has directed key agencies under his ministry to strengthen collaboration as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda. The directive followed a high-level strategic meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).

The meeting focused on improving institutional coordination to advance digital innovation, strengthen regulatory efficiency, enhance cybersecurity, improve digital service delivery, and create a more competitive technology ecosystem. Furthermore, the minister stressed that closer cooperation among the three agencies would enable Nigeria to unlock greater opportunities within the global digital economy while supporting sustainable economic growth.

Dr. Tijani explained that digital transformation has become one of the Federal Government’s major priorities because technology now drives productivity, innovation, investment, education, healthcare, financial services, and public administration. Consequently, he said government institutions responsible for regulating and promoting the sector must work together with a common vision to deliver faster and more effective results.

According to the minister, stronger collaboration will eliminate duplication of responsibilities, improve policy implementation, and ensure that government resources are utilised more efficiently. Furthermore, coordinated planning will enable the agencies to respond more quickly to emerging technologies while addressing new challenges affecting Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.

He noted that the NCC, NITDA, and NDPC each perform unique but interconnected responsibilities within the communications and technology sector. Therefore, closer institutional cooperation will create stronger policy alignment while improving regulatory consistency across the industry. Such cooperation will also reduce uncertainty for businesses and encourage greater confidence among local and international investors.

Dr. Tijani reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing reforms that promote digital innovation and support Nigeria’s ambition of becoming Africa’s leading digital economy. Furthermore, he observed that technology continues to reshape global economies at an unprecedented pace. As a result, Nigeria must strengthen its institutions to remain competitive within the rapidly changing digital landscape.

The minister also emphasised that effective regulation remains essential for encouraging innovation while protecting consumers, businesses, and investors. Furthermore, harmonised regulatory frameworks will simplify compliance requirements, reduce unnecessary administrative burdens, and improve the overall operating environment for technology companies. A transparent regulatory system, he noted, encourages long-term investment and strengthens economic confidence.

Innovation featured prominently during the strategic discussions. Dr. Tijani explained that Nigeria possesses enormous digital talent capable of driving economic diversification and creating high-quality employment opportunities. Furthermore, he encouraged stronger institutional support for startups, software developers, technology entrepreneurs, research institutions, and innovation hubs operating across the country. By expanding opportunities for innovators, Nigeria can build globally competitive digital businesses while increasing its contribution to the knowledge economy.

The minister also highlighted the growing importance of cybersecurity and data protection within modern digital economies. Furthermore, increasing digital adoption requires stronger safeguards to protect personal information, government systems, and business operations from cyber threats. He therefore stressed that closer collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission would strengthen compliance with data protection regulations while improving public confidence in digital platforms and online services.

Dr. Tijani noted that digital trust remains one of the most valuable assets within the technology ecosystem. Citizens and businesses are more willing to embrace digital services when they believe their personal information remains secure. Consequently, coordinated efforts between the agencies will support stronger governance, encourage responsible digital practices, and promote greater confidence in Nigeria’s digital economy.

The meeting also examined strategies for expanding digital inclusion throughout the country. Furthermore, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to increasing broadband penetration, improving digital literacy, expanding affordable internet access, and ensuring that underserved communities benefit from digital opportunities. He observed that inclusive digital development strengthens economic participation while reducing inequality across different regions.

Dr. Tijani added that improved collaboration would enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness by creating a more predictable policy environment for investors and technology companies. Furthermore, coordinated implementation of national digital policies will accelerate innovation, attract investment, strengthen entrepreneurship, and improve Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s fastest-growing technology destinations.

He expressed confidence that stronger institutional partnerships would deliver measurable benefits for businesses, government agencies, investors, and ordinary Nigerians. Furthermore, efficient coordination among the NCC, NITDA, and NDPC will improve public service delivery while supporting the broader objectives of economic diversification and sustainable development.

The minister concluded that Nigeria’s digital future depends not only on technological innovation but also on strong institutions capable of working together toward shared national goals. Furthermore, sustained collaboration among the country’s leading digital agencies will improve regulatory efficiency, promote responsible innovation, strengthen cybersecurity, expand digital inclusion, enhance investor confidence, and position Nigeria to fully harness the enormous opportunities presented by the global digital economy. As the Federal Government continues implementing its digital transformation agenda, coordinated action across these institutions is expected to drive economic growth, improve governance, create employment opportunities, and accelerate Nigeria’s emergence as a leading technology hub in Africa.
