Mbah, Uchenna Nnaji, Chinyeaka Ohaa Among 16 Candidates for 2027 Enugu Governorship Election

Governor Peter Mbah, former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Chief Uchenna Nnaji, and former Federal Permanent Secretary, Chief Chinyeaka Ohaa, are among 16 candidates listed for the 2027 Enugu State governorship election.

The candidates, representing different political parties, are seeking to occupy the Government House in Enugu as preparations intensify for the next general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published the final list of governorship candidates, providing an overview of the individuals nominated by political parties to contest the state’s top executive position.

Mbah, who is seeking a second term, is listed as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Nnaji is representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Ohaa is the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Their inclusion places candidates with different political affiliations in a contest that will give voters an opportunity to assess competing proposals for the state’s development.

Sixteen Candidates Represent Different Parties

The final list features candidates from 16 political parties, reflecting the range of political platforms participating in the Enugu governorship race.

Other candidates on the list include Chukwuma Obodoeze Ocho of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Edwin Ikechukwu Alor of Accord, Sam Ayogu of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Ken Ikeh of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Afamefuna Samuel Ani of the Action Peoples Party (APP).

The list also includes Obioma Nnaemeka Nnamani of the Because Of Our Tomorrow Party, Nnamdi Ugwu of the Democratic Leadership Alliance, Okwudilichukwu Chukwudera Ugwu of the Labour Party and J. Nnaji of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

Other candidates are Christopher Ndubuisi Okonkwo of the National Rescue Movement, Friday Iloka of the Social Democratic Party, Anthony Ifeanyi Udeani of the Young Progressives Party and Elvis Chinazam Ugwoke of the Zenith Labour Party.

The candidates will seek to build support among voters across the state’s three senatorial districts, as well as in urban centres, rural communities and local government areas.

Mbah Seeks Another Term

Mbah’s candidacy places his administration’s record and policy priorities at the centre of the campaign conversation.

As the incumbent governor, he is expected to present his administration’s projects, reforms and social interventions as part of his case for re-election.

His opponents, meanwhile, will have the opportunity to outline alternative approaches to governance and address issues that residents consider important, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment, security and economic development.

The contest will also provide a platform for voters to assess the extent to which the different candidates’ proposals respond to the needs of communities across Enugu State.

However, the publication of the candidate list does not determine the outcome of the election. The final decision rests with eligible voters through the electoral process.

Nnaji and Ohaa Among the Challengers

Nnaji, a former minister, will contest under the PDP platform, while Ohaa will represent the NDC.

Their participation adds to the range of candidates seeking to challenge the incumbent governor and present alternative political programmes.

The presence of multiple parties means the campaign will involve efforts to communicate policy positions, engage communities and persuade voters to support individual candidates.

The candidates’ backgrounds and political affiliations may feature in public debate, but voters will also have reason to examine their policy proposals, governing priorities and plans for addressing the state’s challenges.

Issues Likely to Shape the Campaign

As political activities gather momentum, governance and service delivery are likely to remain central issues in the Enugu election conversation.

Education, healthcare, road infrastructure, security, job creation and the cost of living are among the areas that can influence how residents assess the performance of the state government and the proposals presented by challengers.

The campaign period will also test the ability of political parties to engage voters peacefully and communicate their positions without intimidation or violence.

For the candidates, reaching voters across the state will require more than public declarations of ambition. They will need to explain their priorities, outline how they intend to implement their programmes and respond to questions about funding, accountability and measurable results.

Voters to Decide Enugu’s Next Governor

With 16 candidates on the final list, the 2027 Enugu governorship election will feature a broad field of political choices.

Mbah will seek a fresh mandate, while Nnaji, Ohaa and the other candidates will campaign for the opportunity to lead the state.

The election will ultimately be decided by voters, whose participation will determine which candidate receives the mandate to govern Enugu for the next term.

As the campaign develops, public attention is expected to focus on the candidates’ programmes, their responses to residents’ concerns and the conduct of political parties throughout the electoral process.
