The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has announced proactive steps toward establishing fish villages and integrated poultry clusters across Nigeria as part of a broader strategy to unlock the enormous potential of the country’s fisheries and poultry subsectors while accelerating food production and rural economic development.
The initiative forms part of NALDA’s ongoing efforts to modernise agriculture, create employment opportunities, improve food security, and increase local production through sustainable agricultural investments.
Furthermore, the authority explained that the proposed projects will encourage commercial-scale production, improve farmers’ productivity, strengthen agricultural value chains, and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda.
Expanding Nigeria’s Fisheries Potential
NALDA noted that Nigeria possesses abundant water resources capable of supporting large-scale fish production.
Furthermore, the proposed fish villages will provide organised production centres where fish farmers can access modern facilities, improved production techniques, quality fingerlings, feed, processing equipment, and better market opportunities.
The authority believes that expanding domestic fish production will reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported fish while increasing local supply.
Greater production strengthens food security.
Integrated Poultry Clusters to Drive Growth
The agency also revealed plans to establish integrated poultry clusters designed to support every stage of poultry production.
Furthermore, the clusters will bring together hatcheries, feed production, poultry farming, veterinary services, processing facilities, storage infrastructure, and marketing systems within coordinated production hubs.
According to NALDA, this integrated approach will improve efficiency, reduce production costs, and strengthen the competitiveness of Nigeria’s poultry industry.
Integrated production increases productivity.
Creating Employment Opportunities
NALDA explained that both projects will generate substantial employment opportunities, particularly for youths and women living in rural communities.
Furthermore, fish villages and poultry clusters will create direct jobs in farming, processing, transportation, equipment maintenance, packaging, distribution, and agribusiness services.
The initiative will also stimulate indirect employment through supporting industries and local supply chains.
Agriculture remains a major employer.
Strengthening Food Security
The authority stressed that increasing domestic production of fish and poultry remains essential for improving Nigeria’s food security.
Furthermore, higher production levels will enhance the availability of affordable animal protein while supporting healthier nutrition for millions of Nigerians.
Expanding local supply also helps stabilise food prices by reducing shortages in the market.
Food security supports national stability.
Supporting Rural Development
NALDA emphasised that locating the projects within rural communities will stimulate local economic activities and improve livelihoods.
Furthermore, increased agricultural investment will encourage infrastructure development, strengthen local businesses, and create sustainable income opportunities for farming households.
Rural communities benefit directly from agricultural growth.
Promoting Value Addition
The authority explained that processing and value addition remain central components of the initiative.
Furthermore, modern processing facilities within the fish villages and poultry clusters will reduce post-harvest losses, improve product quality, extend shelf life, and increase farmers’ earnings through access to higher-value markets.
Value addition strengthens agricultural profitability.
Encouraging Private Sector Participation
NALDA reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with private investors, financial institutions, development partners, and state governments to ensure the successful implementation of the projects.
Furthermore, public-private partnerships will provide additional funding, technical expertise, innovation, and commercial opportunities capable of sustaining long-term agricultural development.
Partnerships accelerate economic growth.
Advancing Nigeria’s Agricultural Transformation
The National Agricultural Land Development Authority stated that the establishment of fish villages and integrated poultry clusters represents another important step toward transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Furthermore, by expanding fish production, strengthening poultry farming, creating employment, supporting rural development, promoting value addition, and encouraging strategic investment, the initiative is expected to improve food security, increase agricultural productivity, and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s long-term economic growth and sustainable national development.
