Mbah Pledges World Class National Sports Festival as Enugu Steps Up Preparations

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering a world class and memorable 23rd National Sports Festival, tagged “Coal City Games,” as preparations intensify across the state.

Mbah gave the assurance during an inspection of the Awgu Games Village, one of the facilities scheduled to host athletes and officials during the festival. He said the state would ensure that the infrastructure and arrangements meet the expectations of a major national sporting event.

The 2026 National Sports Festival is scheduled to hold in Enugu from November 27 to December 11, 2026, bringing athletes from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory together for competition, talent development and national integration.

Mbah Inspects Awgu Games Village

During the inspection, the governor assessed the quality and pace of work at the Awgu Games Village, which had remained largely underdeveloped for an extended period.

According to Mbah, ongoing construction and rehabilitation will transform the facility into a modern sports village capable of meeting the requirements of the festival.

A major component of the project is the construction of a 1,000 capacity bed hostel, which is expected to provide accommodation for athletes and other participants.

In addition, work is progressing on indoor and outdoor courts, a standard FIFA football pitch and an eight lane athletics track.

Mbah said the development goes beyond preparing for the festival because the facilities are expected to continue serving athletes and sports development in Enugu after the competition ends.

Enugu Targets International Standards

The governor has repeatedly emphasised that Enugu intends to host the festival at a standard that reflects the importance of the event.

Rather than treating the National Sports Festival as a temporary sporting gathering, the state government is positioning the competition as an opportunity to strengthen sporting infrastructure and showcase Enugu to visitors from across Nigeria.

Moreover, major facilities across the state are undergoing upgrades as preparations continue.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, which will serve as one of the major venues, is receiving extensive reconstruction and modernisation.

The work includes a new FIFA standard football pitch, athletics track, improved spectator seating, roofing and canopy systems, upgraded VIP and VVIP stands, modern changing rooms and improved access control.

Furthermore, new electronic scoreboards, perimeter displays, floodlighting and other electrical and mechanical systems are being introduced.

A Festival Designed to Showcase Nigerian Talent

The National Sports Festival remains an important platform for discovering and developing athletes from different parts of Nigeria.

Consequently, the Coal City Games will give emerging athletes an opportunity to compete at national level while allowing sports administrators to identify talents capable of progressing to higher levels of competition.

For Enugu, hosting the festival also provides an opportunity to showcase its sporting culture and infrastructure to athletes, coaches, officials, sponsors, journalists and sports enthusiasts.

The state will therefore attract considerable attention throughout the event, making the quality of organisation and facilities particularly important.

Mascot Adds Momentum to Preparations

Preparations received another boost with the unveiling of the official mascot and logo of the Coal City Games.

The mascot, named “Odum Eze, Lion King,” was unveiled as organisers intensified efforts to build national awareness around the festival.

The lion represents qualities including strength, courage, leadership and discipline, qualities organisers also expect participating athletes to demonstrate during the competition.

The unveiling further reinforced Enugu’s commitment to delivering a festival that meets international standards and provides a memorable experience for participants and spectators.

Federal and State Authorities Work Together

The scale of the preparations has also brought the Enugu State Government and the National Sports Commission into closer collaboration.

The two levels of government have continued to inspect facilities and monitor preparations covering sporting venues, accommodation, transportation and other operational requirements.

This cooperation is important because a successful multi sport event requires more than quality playing fields.

Athletes need suitable accommodation, reliable transportation, adequate security, medical support and efficient logistics.

Therefore, the final stages of preparation will involve ensuring that these different components work together seamlessly.

Sports Infrastructure Could Support Tourism and Business

The festival could also generate increased economic activity for Enugu.

Thousands of athletes, officials, coaches, journalists, sponsors and spectators are expected to converge on the state during the event.

As a result, businesses in hospitality, transportation, food services, retail, entertainment and other sectors could experience increased activity.

Hotels and accommodation providers will have to cater to visitors, while transportation operators will support movement between sporting venues and other locations.

Furthermore, the attention generated by the festival could give Enugu an opportunity to showcase its tourism attractions and encourage visitors to explore the state beyond the sporting venues.

Awgu Games Village Enters Crucial Phase

With the November opening date approaching, the Awgu Games Village and other facilities have entered a decisive stage of preparation.

The governor has emphasised the need to maintain the pace of work because the remaining timeline is limited.

Consequently, contractors and officials will have to complete unfinished construction, test facilities and ensure that the accommodation and logistical arrangements are ready before athletes begin arriving.

The Games Village is expected to play an important role in the overall experience of participating contingents.

Beyond accommodation, its readiness will contribute to the smooth coordination of athletes and officials throughout the festival.

Enugu Seeks a Lasting Sports Legacy

For the Mbah administration, the Coal City Games represent more than an opportunity to host a major national event.

The investment in sports facilities could provide Enugu with infrastructure capable of supporting athletes and sporting activities long after the closing ceremony.

In addition, improved facilities could encourage greater attention to grassroots sports and create pathways for young athletes who may otherwise struggle to access quality training environments.

That legacy, however, will ultimately depend on how effectively the state maintains and uses the facilities after the Games.

Countdown to the Coal City Games

With the November 27 opening date approaching, preparations for the 23rd National Sports Festival have entered their decisive stage.

Mbah’s latest inspection highlights the importance the state government has placed on completing the necessary infrastructure and operational arrangements.

Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission and the Local Organising Committee are continuing to coordinate preparations for the arrival of athletes and officials from across the country.

Ultimately, the Coal City Games will provide Enugu with an opportunity to demonstrate its capacity to host a major national sporting event while giving Nigerian athletes a platform to compete, develop and showcase their abilities.

For the host state, the objective is clear: deliver a festival that runs smoothly, meets the expected standards and leaves behind sporting infrastructure that continues to benefit athletes and young Nigerians long after the final competition has ended.
