Tinubu Urges UN Member States to Adopt UN Charter Preamble in National Constitutions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on member states of the United Nations to incorporate the Preamble to the UN Charter into their national constitutions, saying the move would reinforce global peace, justice, human dignity, and international cooperation.

The President made the call while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the principles and ideals of the United Nations, stressing that stronger adherence to the Charter’s values would help nations build more peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous societies.

Furthermore, he noted that the UN Charter continues to provide a universal framework for promoting peace, protecting fundamental rights, and encouraging cooperation among nations in addressing global challenges.

Strengthening the Foundations of Peace

President Tinubu emphasized that the principles contained in the Preamble to the UN Charter remain as relevant today as they were at the organisation’s founding.

Furthermore, he observed that values such as justice, equality, respect for human dignity, peaceful coexistence, and international solidarity should not remain aspirational ideals alone but should also find expression within national legal and constitutional frameworks.

According to the President, embedding these principles in national constitutions would strengthen democratic governance while encouraging governments to uphold the rule of law and respect for human rights.

He added that nations flourish when they place justice, fairness, and the dignity of every individual at the centre of public policy.

Promoting Human Dignity and Justice

The President stressed that protecting human dignity remains one of the foremost responsibilities of every government.

Furthermore, he explained that constitutions should reflect the universal values that promote equality, freedom, and justice for all citizens regardless of background, ethnicity, religion, or social status.

He noted that societies built on fairness and respect for human rights are better positioned to achieve lasting peace and sustainable development.

Consequently, he encouraged governments to continue strengthening institutions that safeguard justice, accountability, and democratic principles.

Deepening International Cooperation

President Tinubu also highlighted the importance of stronger collaboration among nations in addressing shared global challenges.

Furthermore, he observed that issues such as climate change, terrorism, poverty, food insecurity, migration, public health emergencies, and economic instability require coordinated international responses.

He stated that the spirit of cooperation embodied in the UN Charter should continue to guide relationships among nations while promoting dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful resolution of disputes.

According to him, no nation can effectively confront today’s complex global challenges in isolation.

Supporting Sustainable Development

The President explained that peace, security, and development remain closely interconnected.

Furthermore, stable societies create favourable conditions for investment, innovation, education, healthcare, and economic growth.

He argued that strengthening constitutional commitments to the principles of the UN Charter would help create environments where sustainable development can flourish.

Such commitments, he said, would also encourage governments to adopt policies that promote social inclusion, economic opportunity, and shared prosperity.

Nigeria’s Commitment to Global Values

President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to the ideals of the United Nations and its continued support for multilateral cooperation.

Furthermore, he noted that Nigeria remains committed to contributing to international peace, regional stability, democratic governance, and sustainable development.

He emphasized that the country’s foreign policy continues to promote dialogue, diplomacy, and constructive engagement with the international community.

According to the President, Nigeria will continue working with global partners to advance peace, security, and economic progress both within Africa and beyond.

Encouraging Constitutional Leadership

The President called on governments worldwide to view their constitutions not only as legal documents but also as instruments for promoting shared human values.

Furthermore, he said constitutional frameworks should inspire responsible leadership, protect citizens’ rights, and strengthen national unity.

He expressed confidence that greater alignment between national constitutions and the ideals of the UN Charter would contribute to a more peaceful and cooperative international order.

A Vision for a More Peaceful World

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appeal reflects Nigeria’s continued support for multilateralism and the enduring principles upon which the United Nations was established.

Furthermore, his call for member states to incorporate the Preamble to the UN Charter into their constitutions underscores the importance of justice, human dignity, peaceful coexistence, and international cooperation in today’s world.

As global challenges continue to evolve, the President maintained that stronger commitment to these shared values will help nations build resilient institutions, deepen cooperation, and create a more peaceful, just, and prosperous future for all.
