The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dayo Mobereola, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to advancing regional maritime integration, cooperation, and capacity development across Africa.
He stated that stronger collaboration among African maritime administrations is essential for promoting safe navigation, expanding trade, enhancing maritime security, and unlocking the continent’s blue economy potential.
Furthermore, Mobereola emphasized that partnerships and knowledge sharing will strengthen the maritime sector and contribute to sustainable economic development across the region.
Strengthening Regional Collaboration
The NIMASA Director General noted that closer cooperation among African nations will improve the harmonisation of maritime regulations, facilitate information sharing, and encourage joint initiatives that address common challenges within the sector.
He explained that regional integration would enhance shipping operations, improve regulatory efficiency, and support the growth of intra-African trade under existing continental economic frameworks.
In addition, stronger partnerships will help build resilient maritime institutions capable of responding effectively to emerging industry trends.
Building Human Capacity for the Future
Mobereola stressed the importance of investing in human capital development to ensure that Africa’s maritime industry remains globally competitive.
He called for expanded training programmes, technical exchanges, and professional development initiatives that equip maritime professionals with the skills required to operate in an increasingly digital and technology-driven industry.
Such investments, he said, will strengthen the region’s workforce and create greater employment opportunities for young Africans.
Unlocking the Blue Economy
The NIMASA chief highlighted the enormous economic potential of Africa’s maritime sector, noting that improved cooperation can stimulate shipping, logistics, fisheries, tourism, marine services, and port development.
By strengthening maritime governance and encouraging investment, African countries can harness the blue economy to generate jobs, increase trade, and support long-term economic growth.
Moreover, coordinated regional efforts will help maximise the benefits of the continent’s vast marine resources while promoting environmental sustainability.
Promoting Maritime Safety and Security
Mobereola also reaffirmed NIMASA’s commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance maritime safety, security, and regulatory compliance across African waters.
He emphasized that collaborative approaches to combating maritime crime, improving search and rescue capabilities, and strengthening port security will contribute to safer and more efficient maritime operations throughout the region.
These efforts will further enhance investor confidence and strengthen Africa’s position in global shipping.
A Shared Vision for Africa’s Maritime Future
The renewed commitment by NIMASA reflects Nigeria’s determination to play a leading role in advancing maritime integration and institutional development across Africa.
Through stronger regional cooperation, capacity building, and strategic partnerships, the agency aims to promote a modern, secure, and competitive maritime industry that supports trade, economic growth, and sustainable development across the continent.
